If Maryland directs public funds collected from illegal gambling activities to the Digital Asset Reserve Fund for cryptocurrency investment, what would your district give up as a result?

Hint: consider what benefits your constituents might receive if those public funds were invested directly in your assigned policy portfolio (Environment, Energy, or Transportation) instead.

As a representative from District 8, this bill can cause a real opportunity cost for our residents. Currently, in White Marsh, residents have very limited to almost no public transit access. The money that instead gets diverted into the Digital Asset Reserve Fund could otherwise provide substantial benefits to our residents, and any monetary loss can halt our efforts to advance our transportation infrastructure in areas like White Marsh, where we’d like to expand our bus services. Putting money into our transportation gives us a predictable economic return. Public transportation and the restoration of our roads will make it safer to drive, which will reduce accident-related costs. Also, better transit access raises property values, benefiting our state and local business revenue and giving an incentive for business owners to invest in our district. When we compare this with investing in cryptocurrency, it’s very important to understand there is no guarantee of a positive return; we could see this money grow or shrink. Even if the crypto investment grows in profit, who does it benefit? Probably not a Perry Hall commuter stuck in traffic. So gambling this money away that we collected from illegal gamblers will not help our needs and is a poor trade-off for a district that is still in need of basic transit investment.

I agree that transportation is an important opportunity cost to consider when deciding how to use these funds. I like your point that improving public transportation could provide more direct benefits to people in the district. At the same time, I think cryptocurrency investment could give Maryland another way to potentially grow the funds. I also agree that opportunity cost is important because putting money into cryptocurrency means giving up the chance to invest it somewhere else. However, I think District 1 has different needs that should also be considered, especially when it comes to energy infrastructure and reliable energy. Investing in energy projects could create jobs and provide long-term benefits for residents in Western Maryland. While transportation improvements can reduce costs and help businesses, energy improvements can also support businesses and make communities more reliable and sustainable. I think Maryland should consider how the money could benefit different districts instead of assuming that cryptocurrency will provide the best return. What specific transportation projects would District 8 prioritize if the money were not invested in cryptocurrency?
